The first season of Girls on the Run for Loudon County was during the fall of 2008 and included 20 girls from Loudon and Philadelphia Elementary Schools. The program has shown steady growth each season. This fall, the 7th season for Loudon County, fifty-eight 3rd-6th grade girls participated, from six different schools. Teams were from Eaton Elementary, Greenback School, Lenoir City Intermediate, Loudon Elementary, North Middle and Philadelphia Elementary. At each season’s conclusion, the girls complete a 5k running event as a group. The Loudon County and Lenoir City teams joined over 300 other Girls on the Run participants from around the Knoxville area, on Sunday, November 20, 2011, and ran in the Girls on the Run 5k at Tyson Park in Knoxville.
The Loudon County and Lenoir City teams also had an end of season pool party at the Lenoir City pool on Saturday, November 19th. The girls, their families and coaches enjoyed an evening of pizza and swimming to celebrate their accomplishments as individuals, a team, and a community over the past ten weeks. All coaches in Loudon County are volunteers. Loudon County had a total of 21 coaches this season consisting of: 9 teachers, 4 parents, 5 high school students, 1 middle school student and 2 college students. The coaches volunteer their time two days a week, for ten weeks to work with the participants. Thank you to these wonderful ladies – Girls on the Run wouldn’t exist in Loudon County without your help! The spring 2012 season will begin in February.
